Content Warning Information

UNDUE BURDEN includes content that depicts ableism, intersectional abuse and violence, and medical trauma.

UNDUE BURDEN contains language that users may find outdated, offensive, or traumatizing. This includes historical medical terminology, identity, and naming. This language may come from the material archived (such as a newspaper article) or from the donor’s description of their archive materials.

Our archivists work with our donors to caption their materials using the donors’ language. This language is preserved for historical accuracy and to ensure that our donors’ voices are not censored in telling their stories. This language does not reflect our archivists’ beliefs or opinions. Our archivists author image descriptions and where needed, “archivist notes”, which are clearly labeled as such.

Information like current phone numbers and addresses has been blacked out to protect our donors’ privacy.

UNDUE BURDEN also contains images that some viewers may find disturbing.

UNDUE BURDEN archive entries that include any of the challenging content described above are labeled with the initials “CW” followed by relevant content warning keywords.

Visitors to the archive can view materials organized by donor, subject tag, media tag, and content warning keyword tag. Using the content warning keyword tag may help visitors to the archive navigate around traumatizing content.

Please view UNDUE BURDEN with discretion.

UNDUE BURDEN’s team periodically reviews and revises our content warning practices in an ongoing effort to provide just archiving processes.

If you would like to provide input to UNDUE BURDEN regarding challenging content, please contact undueburden@gmail.com
